Description

An exceptionally delicate pair of antique Japanese blue and white porcelain plates, beautifully decorated with an intricate garden of chrysanthemums, blossoms and tiny birds.

What makes these especially lovely is the porcelain itself. Remarkably thin and translucent, the plates allow light to pass through the porcelain, revealing just how fine and delicate the body is. The softly scalloped edges and extraordinarily detailed cobalt blue decoration give each plate an almost lace-like quality.

The fine white porcelain and intricate blue-and-white decoration are characteristic of high-quality Japanese sometsuke porcelain, possibly Hirado/Mikawachi or fine Arita ware. The plates are unmarked, so we cannot make a definitive attribution, but their translucency, delicacy and beautifully executed decoration speak to the quality of their craftsmanship.

We love these displayed where all of that wonderful detail can be appreciated — tucked into a plate wall, propped on a bookshelf, layered into a collected china cabinet, or mixed with other blue and white pieces on a tabletop. Be sure to see our photograph of one held to the light to appreciate just how beautifully translucent the porcelain is.

Sold as a set of two.

As with all of our vintage and antique finds, these pieces may show subtle variations and signs of age that are part of their history and charm.
