Do you have the feeling that something just isn't right with your family room?  The seating is okay, but there isn't quite enough space for everyone in your family to be comfortable?  When you have guests, are you bringing chairs into the space, so others can have a place to sit?  We had a client that had the same problem!
This family of five wanted a space where they could all be together.  Whether it was working or schooling from home, playing a game or curling up for a movie, they needed their space to work harder for them.
We started by incorporating an equal-sided sectional, for loads of comfy seating.  Then we paired it with a roomy coffee table that was big enough for snacks, games and puzzles.  In lieu of an end table, we tucked a desk at the end of the sectional that is a great spot to work from home, or simply return a couple of emails at the end of the day.  When not in use as a desk, it doubles as a needed end table for that end of the sectional.
A pair of comfortable lounge chairs share a round ottoman, and are a great spot to put your feet up with a good book.  Layered in is a storage chest to the left of the sliding door, which works wonderfully for storing files, family paperwork, or simply a few office supplies.
A large storage chest under the television has roomy drawers for toys, cozy throws or games.  The room is also loaded up with four table lamps and a floor lamp to make the space cozy and warm on those winter days in Wisconsin.
The next plan we created for this client's consideration included many of the same elements of the previous plan, except we incorporated a sofa and a loveseat instead of a sectional.  This works well if the client wants another spot for an iPad or lamp in the corner of the room.  With five table lamps, and one floor lamp, this option offers the most opportunity for task light and overall, ambient light.

This plan incorporates a functional game table with a pendant light over it in the corner.  This is the perfect spot for games or projects you would like to leave "in progress", but don't want to hijack your kitchen table while the project is in progress.  With five lamps and a pendant light, this room option is perfect for creating cozy work zones within the space.  An ottoman "telescopes" under the coffee table for extra seating, when needed.
The last plan presented to the client gives them the largest desk option.  Great for working or schooling from home!  With a pair of ottomans on either side of the generous television cabinet, they are a great place to store cozy throws, slippers or even dog toys.
Having your family room meet all your needs feels like the ultimate luxury - a space for all the things you need and all your most important people.  What could be better?
